Round 2 Dave Peck Memorial Race

Round 2 of the British Women’s Team Cup, the Dave Peck Memorial Road Race, took place on Sunday 21st April 2024.

With a slightly chilly 1100 start, 65 riders from 18 teams took to the start line. A steady neutralised roll out, led to the start of the racing on Chobham Lane.

The course was deceptively technical, with a couple of tight corners and uphill drag to the finish stringing out the peloton in the first few laps.

The first lap was fairly steady, with the racing really heating up in the second lap. Three riders attacked on Valley End Road, leading into the 180 turn at the roundabout in the middle of the course. The bunch came back together, however, and it was a number of crashes that began the war of attrition, rather than further attacks.

The race was neutralised midway due to a crash requiring medical attention for one rider. All came away relatively unscathed, with their bikes luckily bearing the brunt of the damage rather than their bodies. We wish them all the very best of speedy recoveries.

As the racing restarted, the attacks came thick and fast. Two riders attempted to gap the bunch, Charliiy Berry (The Phoenix Collective) and Georgia Bullard (Doltcini-O’Shea) but neither stuck. However, on the next lap an attack and counter-attack by riders from The Phoenix Collective and DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK, eventually including three other riders – went clear.

This break included our Combativity prize winner, awarded in association with London Academy, Katie-Ann Calton (Saint Piran WRT). Congratulations Katie-Ann for showing real assertiveness and bravery in your racing! Try, and try again – and eventually you will succeed…this is a rider with a very bright future ahead in the peloton!

The break was reduced to three riders; Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne (DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK), Lydia Watts (The Phoenix Collective) and Lotty Dawson (Brother UK-ON Form), with a storming peloton trying to reduce the gap from behind, led by Caitlin Dimbleby (FTP-Fulfil the Potential-Racing).

The break stayed away, however, with a two minute gap going into the last lap. The finish includes an uphill drag, followed by a small flatter respite and a second kick up to the finish line.

Our winner was Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne (DAS-Hutchinson-Brother UK), followed by Lydia Watts (The Phoenix Collective) and Lotty Dawson (Brother UK-ON Form). Caitlin Dimbleby (FTP-Fulfil the Potential-Racing) sprinted for 4th in the main bunch sprint.
