Race 1 - Dave Peck Memorial

Organised by Twickenham CC - Sunday 27th March

PRO-NOCTIS PERFECT

Report by Jon Miles

Isabel Darvill, Pro Noctis -Rotor-Redhill Cycles-Heidi Kjeldsen sprinted to a win to continue her race teams start to retaining the title in the British Women’s Team Cup.

This first race in the series, with its traditional opener the Dave Peck Memorial organised by Lisa West and her Twickenham CC Team was held in progressively cold windy weather after the glorious sunshine of the previous day.

After a lap or so the Commissaire Team were required to stop the race to warn the riders of their own safety by not crossing the centre line to ride in the oncoming traffic lane.

This seemed to calm the riders and the next laps were mainly speculative but no attacking although the pace increased dramatically in the final few laps. However the final time up the Staple Hill, the 10th time up this difficult climb it was going to be a bunch sprint. With a few metres to the white line Isabel shot from the middle of the race to claim the first big race of the season.

Later Isabel explained “It was not a race really where anyone wanted to just go, Charlotte Berry had a go which got riders to up the pace a bit. We weren’t going really fast, with 3 laps to go the pace just kept creeping. I had a couple of problems with my gears but it got sorted. On the last lap we got to the bottom of the climb, the sprint started right at the bottom of that final hill. I did this race in 2019 so knew what to expect when we came round that left bend people just put their foot down and it was a long sprint”.

“It is one of those climbs that there is not enough time from the top of the hill to the finish line to start a sprint so you have got to just go”.

Sad to report however that Philippa Jenkins of 1904 RT, prior to the race start was just warming up when she crashed hurting her face so was not able to start. Most of her team pulled out of the race.

SAMMIE SMASHES COALVILLE

Report by Jon Miles

Sammie Stuart, Team London-Brother Uk - won a fast British Team Cup using her famous

“diesel” legs to out drag the rest of the field on a sunny day in Coalville.

With a near full field this traditional early season event organised by Nick Horner Maddox

and Coalville Wheelers for over 10 years now was enlivened halfway through the 7 lap race

when Gemma Sargent, Saint Piran WRT clipped off the front and stayed active for a full lap

before the bunch brought her back.

No one else could get away so the race sped towards a sprint with Sammie explaining

“This is my first British Team Cup win. I am surprised, we went well as a team today. With a long

distance sprint, which is my style of racing actually,  we came to the final climb...which is

my strength, my Diesel engine took over. There were 3 in front slightly and I bridged across

to them and that was that”

Injured in a crash halfway through Lauren Watson, possible broken elbow and damage to her face - we all wish her a swift recovery.

KELLY HAS THE LEGS

Report by Jon Miles

Kelly Murphy, riding for Ellmore Digital Composite Team, won the latest British Women’s Cup race held on the Ashley circuit neat Stourport on Severn with great organisation by Peter Hall.

On a tough course that just kept on going up and down no one was allowed to get away with the race expecting a sprint finish but Kelly had other ideas.

Using her time trial strength she just rode away on the final lap to win by a minute.

Kelly said “This is the first National race that I have won. I am in a time trialling club so don’t do a lot of races. I have a few time trials down this way so was familiar with the roads, I knew the roads were hard”

“This was my first National race, the standard was high.

I have been in Belgium racing on the track so I have only done a few circuit races.

I had done a few races in Ireland over the Covid lock down time”.

MARY MAKES IT TWO

Report by Jon Miles

Mary Wilkinson - Team Boompods, totally dominated the latest round of the British Women's Team Cup held on the Edge Hill course superbly organised by Michael Gillett and the Banbury CC.

On a perfect summers day an almost full field started out to ride the always difficult course to tackle three laps.
It was on the 2nd lap that the action started with Mary, who was obviously after the Queen of the Mountain titles as well, which she scooped up.
12 riders escaped the bunch with initially a lead of one minute. Bexy Dew-Pro Noctis,
Monica Greenwood-Team Boompods, Lucy Harris-Team Boompods, Danielle Khan-Ellmore Digital Composite, Maddie Heywood-Team Watto LDN, Alice McWilliam-Bianchi Hunt Morvelo, Kerry Middleton-Team LDN, Tamsin Miller Bianchi Hunt Morvelo, Kelly Murphy-Ellmore Digital Composite, Ruth Shier Team LDN, Lucy Sinclair-Onyx Racing, and Mary.

The escapees piled on the pressure so the gap to the peloton now crept up to over 3 minutes as they battled Edge Hill for the last time....and this is when it all exploded.

Mary explained it this way “It was good to have my team mates with me so we could work well. One team member went very hard downhill on the last lap and that really broke up the bunch until we had just 4 riders coming into the finish”.
“I won here in 2018 so knew the course well, I really went hard at the bottom of the hill and got a nice gap and that was all I needed, it is a very nice course but....phew! It is hard!”

Dramatic Finish

Report by Jon Miles

The first time British Team Cup had been held on the Radford/Inkberrow course, organised for the Solihull club by Rocky Pearson. On a rolling circuit with no big hills it was a wearing down type of race however the race kept together.

With no breaks it was the main bunch that tore along the finishing straight until with 150metres to go there was the frightening sound of crunching metal signalling a touch of wheels that brought down half of the field.

The race was won by Holly Ramsey with Ellen Bennett from Brother UK-Orientation Marketing but at least 16 riders were involved in the crash.

Louise Hart, Boompods, neatly skipped her bike up onto the grass verge and was able to avoid the pile up on the road.......but was not able to avoid the parked car totally redesigning the Mitsubishi rear end. Louise suffered a broken ankle, cuts to her face and an overnight stay in hospital.

SPRINT BATTLE AT NASEBY

Report by Lisa West

Junior racer Awen Roberts Liv CC-Halo Films sprinted to a win over Gemma Sargent Saint Piran and Sannah Zaman Brother UK-Orientation Marketing at the Duncan Murray Wines promoted event superbly run as always by longstanding organisers Welland Valley CC. After a damp corner brought down the riders on lap 1 causing the race to be stopped, we all sighed with relief that only minor scrapes were sustained and an attacking race recommenced.

An elated Awen said "It was a hard course but made it worth it in the end.

It was a bit of chaos after the crash to start with but I think every race has chaos in it anyway. There wasn't really a break as such but I think because they kept on attacking it just split as the pace was constantly on. In the end  it just came to a bunch sprint  so it was whoever had the legs to finish with but I am very pleased with it, a good race!"

KENTUCKY TAKE-AWAY

Report by Jon Miles

On the hottest day so far Heather Mayer - Team LDN - Brother UK won the penultimate British Team Cup race on the Alconbury Hill circuit near Huntingdon.

Due to the heat organiser Ian Watson cut two laps from the race making it 80 kilometres.  Laura Senior LAKA Pedal Mafia started to attack in the second lap which started several attacks from Team LDN but it was Heather and Laura that finally got away at the start of lap three with almost 70kms of the race to go!  They worked really well together in a 2upTT  building a 3 minute break until the heat got the better of Laura enabling Heather to solo in over the line with Laura holding on to 2nd place.  Another attack off the bunch by Dannie Wilkinson  Team LDN - Brother UK saw her time trial in for 3rd place ahead of the bunch sprint.

Winner Heather Mayer, who hails from Kentucky, said of her race “I haven’t had many races this year. During the 2nd lap one of the team said we should try to get away”. “There were a few digs but my one stayed, I didn’t think it would but it worked. I hope to ride the next British Team Cup at Hillingdon in two weeks time, I was fourth last year”.

FIRST STORY FOR LAST

Report by Jon Miles

Kinga Ingram, Storey Racing won the final race of the season long British Team Cup in a close sprint with Libby Smithson, AWOL Worx. Held at Hillingdon and superbly organised by Scott Holmes celebrating the short life of Will Houghton.

This course, known for quick racing saw another rapid race and after just two laps Eline Smith, Laka Pedal Mafia sprang off the front of the bunch for the first attack. And so the  pattern unfolded. Laka Pedal Mafia, already leading on the Team Points totals came to this race with a plan....to Go Hard or Go Home....Eline was away from 6 laps then, then Penny Colloff, Laka Mafia clipped of the front took  to take over but was caught after a lap. Next to go was Anouska Greenaway and Lena Kane both  Laka Pedal Mafia. Having been caught it was the time for Laura Senior, Laka Pedal Mafia and Ellen Bennett, Brother Uk-Orentation who got away for two laps then Eline Smith went again a lap later. She was caught by a trio of Miriam Bullock, Grinta Coaching - Emily Chilton, Saint Piran - Harriet Evans, Brother UK-Orentation. But again they were caught and so it went on, attack...counter...attack in what was becoming a thrilling final British Team Cup finale! Sam Fawcett, Spectra Wiggle..Libby Smithson, AWOL Worx..Gemma Sargent, Sant Piran.. all attacked too.

On the 32nd lap Emily Chilton, Saint Piran and Laura Senior, Laka Pedal Mafia attacked and were away 9 laps but having given their all they were caught antagonisingly in TDF style just before the line culminating in a big bunch sprint with Kinga taking her first ever British Team Cup race.

Winner Kinga after the race told how it happened “I have done a few of the Team Cup races but my team have no interest but The British Team Cup is a great series. With a mixture of abilities it allows riders to gain experience before going into National A. 2nd Cat riders need the Team Cup series which always has  good numbers in races as it is generally hard to get a good field for women. Jumping straight from a Regional B to a National A is a big difference and if you have no bunch skills then it would be a crash fest so this is a good way to step up”.

Laka Pedal Mafia Laura Senior commented “We came here today with a plan, Go Hard or Go Home! We wanted to attack from the gun, we knew we have been developing all season. We wanted to take the win here today but that never happened but we have won the Team Cup! We have worked hard this season and to have the Cup as a new team is fantastic. We intend to stay as a team for the future, we all come together every couple of weeks to talk. This series has really helped us to work together as a team. We always had a goal to win the British Team Cup and really come together, to have a focus so this is a dream really...we were a new team and didn’t know how we compared”

At the end of the race presentation Jon Miles made this statement.
“When I invented the Women’s Team Race Series in 1999, (later called the British Team Cup) women’s racing was in a poor state which our governing body British Cycling had little interest in improving. The time was right for a team based series of races to allow the women’s sport to grow from the first race with 34 to the large fields we see now plus there were no teams as such, certainly not the teams we see today with such sponsorship.

After 23 years it is time fo me to look for someone...or two.. to take over from me to see the next generations enjoy our sport as much as I have.
Please contact either Lisa or myself if you can help or know someone else that can help take this forward"
